When Michael Bublé goes on tour, then his fans can expect great things. The singer and multiple Grammy winner, who became famous with songs like “Feeling so Good”, “Everything” and “It’s a Beautiful Day”, is so multifaceted that his stage technology has to be able to keep up. The technical equipment for his current “To be loved” world tour is from the TAIT company. Giant moveable LED displays, video screens and ingenious lighting set the stage for his performance. However, all this technology has to be set up and taken down before and after each performance. Today’s find shows you how all that works. Enjoy!

“Let there be light” is the recurring theme at Prolight + Sound. In 2014, lighting technology will continue to develop, especially LED technology. At the Frankfurt Trade Fair, from March 12-15, 2013, the exhibitors will present their newest developments. Just like the GLP Light Products GmbH. The newest coup from GLP, for which Prolight visitors do not have to wait until the next fair, is the Volkslicht Spot. This moving head LED is reaching for the stars; it wants to top the success of its predecessor.
Tim Bendzko keeps good company. Just like many other stars, including Shakira, Pink, Xavier Naidoo and Seal, he also uses the proven quality of Sennheiser audio technology. At his summer concert at the Waldbühne Berlin, the singer and songwriter performed his hits “Nur noch kurz die Welt retten”, “Sag einfach Ja” and “Am seidenen Faden” in front of almost 20,000 fans. He used wired and wireless microphones as well as IEM solutions from Sennheiser, which have consistently been exhibited at Prolight + Sound.
Sex sells. That is way it has always been, the way it is, and the way it will always be. At least that is what the Danish headphone manufacturer, AIAIAI thought. In October the company created a provocative as well as catchy ad which caused a sensation. The headphones, including cable, are modelled after the female body. AIAIAI’s message, “Making sound sexy since 2006”, isn’t trying to avoid attention either.
The Danish manufacturer is specialized in everyday quality audio products and promises clear and sharp sound with its stylish and minimalistic headphones. Their current ad definitely leaves you wanting more.
While the preparations for Prolight + Sound 2014 in Frankfurt are running at full speed, Shanghai is taking stock. 444 exhibitors from 17 countries presented their companies and their newest products in the audio, lighting and event categories at Prolight + Sound Shanghai. Nearly 24,000 visitors came to the Shanghai News International Expo Centre from October 10-13, 2013. The biggest fair trend included LED.
Headphones, microphones and headsets have been beyerdynamic’s profession for the past ninety years. “Technological advantage, constant innovation and the highest quality standards” are the axiom of the audio manufacturer from Heilbronn. The customers are always the main focus and also have a say in the design. That’s why the company had the first worldwide Crowdsourcing Design Contest for headphones, whereby 4,902 headphone designs were up for vote. More than 355,000 people voted, and we have a winner.
Pitbull is one of the most well known rappers of his time. His song, “Give Me Everything” made it to number two on the German charts. Currently, together with Kesha and “Timber”, he is in charge of good times on the dance floor, and he is also heating up the American concert halls with his “Global Warming” Tour. With him on tour, are the Moving Head Spotlights, MAC Viper Family, from Martin Professional.
An open air concert on a frozen river just above the Arctic Circle, “Those are challenges which make life exciting,” says Sven Sören Beyer. “And when you can live it up artistically, as we could, it is the perfect combination.” Beyer is Creactive Director of phase7 performing.arts, an artist network based in Berlin. Currently he is preparing the opening ceremony for the Cultural Capital 2014, Umea, Sweden. The frozen river is a completely new experience, but Beyer knows what matters most.
Phase7 was founded in 1999. At the Prolight and Sound 2013 the artist received the Opus Award in the category of Technical Realization for his 3D operatic enactment “Neither” from Morton Feldmann and Simon Beckett. “We are very proud that we were nominated for a project so close to our hearts,” he says. Sometimes it is important to artistically “find your away back”.
How do you fill a concert hall with sound so that the customers in the last row have the same listening experience as those in the first row? The Fohhn Company raises acoustics to a new level with their Focus Modular System which delighted the visitors at Prolight + Sound 2013. Daniela Bohl, PR and Marketing at Fohhn Audio AG, explains in an interview how Focus Modular works.
Sylvester Stallone celebrated his life’s successes with the “Rocky” film series. “Rocky - The Musical”, based upon the film, is now doing the same. The show has been playing in the Hamburger Operettenhaus for the past year. According to the New York Times, it is convincing because it combines the intimate and the epic. The acoustics play an important role, too. Meyer Sound knows what it takes.
The trade fair planning for the coming year has long been finalized at Laserworld (Switzerland) AG. They will definitely be at the Frankfurt Prolight + Sound 2014. “The essential measuring point for us is which trade fair offers which international potential, “ Norbert Stangl, Sales & Marketing Director of the Laserworld Group said. “The more diversity, the better. PLS definitely has that potential.”
International trade fairs such as Prolight + Sound are the perfect opportunity for the Swiss laser manufacturer to present their newest developments to a public from all over the world. According to Stangl the Chinese organizers always want “Made in Germany” on their technology, most recently in the former Olympic Stadium in Peking.
While the Germans diligently carve pumpkins for Halloween, in the USA it has long become a tradition to decorate buildings with all kinds of (lighting) art. Each year at Prolight + Sound exhibitors present the newest lighting technology for shows, concerts and performances. However, it doesn’t always have to be a big event. In your own front yard you can make a big impression with animated lighting. Just as EdwardsLandingLights from Virginia demonstrates in his YouTube videos.
Once again, this year he did not have to be asked twice. Out of more than 8,500 lights, mostly LED and about 1066 channels for computer animation, he put together an amazing show. That, however, was not enough. To be able to “hear” the lights, as EdwardsLandingLights says on YouTube, visitors should turn on their radio, and then they can hear the light show music. Just see for yourself!
At the DPA Microphones stand at Prolight + Sound 2013 there was more than just something nice to look at; there was also something great to hear. The pop band SHEL gave a mini concert for all the visitors and presented the Danish audio manufacturer’s technology. The trade visitors were excited. However it was not limited to the trade visitors, the quality of the DPA Microphones also convinced the successful US heavy metal band Metallica.
Oh, how time flies! Prolight + Sound 2013 closed just six months ago and already the preparations for the upcoming trade fair are running at full steam ahead. Michael Biwer talks about three years directorship for Prolight + Sound, new trends in the branch and the upcoming topics of Prolight + Sound 2014.
Prolight + Sound has been closed six months, and it is almost another six months until the next trade fair. So the fair is actually a ways away, isn’t it?
Michael Biwer: More like just around the corner. My team and I feel like the entire lead time is just flying by. We are in the middle of planning the halls, conferences and the supporting program.
The statement, „putting something in the right light “is not just a saying. The Electronic Theatre Controls GmbH, short ETC, knows that for sure. They are experts when it comes to the right lighting technology for architecture, stage and television. They are responsible for the lighting design at the successful musical “The Lion King”, the Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival, the famous Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas and the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. High quality products and great service, those are the areas where ETC shines, and still remains humble.
„We are shaping the future of the audio industry based upon our history, cultural innovations and passion for excellence.“ That’s the philosophy of Sennheiser Electronic GmbH & Co. KG. This principle is now becoming reality. In July 2013, the long standing company from Wedemark had its ground breaking ceremony for their new Innovation Campus.
The twenty million Euro Innovation Campus will give their employees about 7000 square meters of space room for the most modern working conditions, as well as enough space for events. The opening is planned for the end of 2014.
While Prolight + Sound here is still a long ways away, the preparations for the trade fair in Shanghai are running at full speed. From October 10-13, 2013 500 exhibitors from 15 countries and regions will present their newest products at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. “The large number of international brands and exhibitors at Prolight + Sound Shanghai shows that our trade fair opens doors to enormous business opportunities in Asia,” said Fiona Chiew, assistant manager of the trade fair in Shanghai. “In addition, we have gotten feedback from the exhibitors, that they have gained valuable insights into the industry during our events and seminars.”
It is the perfect illusion that has been fascinating people since the beginning of time. First it was the magician, now it is the technological refinements at the highest level. 3D belongs to the trends of the future, as Prolight + Sound has continually shown. This find from the Bot & Dolly design studios shows another fascinating insight into three dimensional technologies.
The process is called texture mapping wherein deceptively real 3D animation can be created. The video was made as an artistic statement and technical demonstration. The creators used various technologies including large scale robotics, projection mapping and software engineering. The result is extremely impressive. Take a look for yourself!
