We take spatial awareness through sound for granted, but headphones and earbuds can distort our perception of space. Nevertheless, more and more artists have started to use in-ear monitoring (IEM) because it offers an excellent combination of precision and control, as well as freedom of movement. There was still one problem holding IEM back, though, and Aachen-based KLANG:technologies wanted to tackle it: the loss of spatial awareness. By conducting measurements using a dummy head at RWTH Aachen University, their engineers were able to create the basis for acoustic virtual reality that responds to real-time audio signals. This was the birth of 3D in-ear monitoring.
Party city in the desert Las Vegas has a new emblem – and what an emblem: High Roller is not just the biggest Ferris wheel in the world, but also Las Vegas’ top landmark. And as befits the city of gamblers, lovers, Elvis fans and party animals, once darkness falls, the 167m / 550 ft big wheel lights up the night with a brilliant spectrum of colours. Lighting specialists Martin Professional can claim the credit.
One of the greatest challenges was to offer visitors a unique experience from within the passenger cabins as well as from differing points and perspectives outside. Martin Professional’s Tripix range proved to be the best fit. At the time, they were the only products on the market with a converging light source, meaning the viewer sees exactly the light that the programmer intended. A classical RGB source simply wasn’t an option.
Headphones, microphones and headsets have been beyerdynamic’s profession for the past ninety years. “Technological advantage, constant innovation and the highest quality standards” are the axiom of the audio manufacturer from Heilbronn. The customers are always the main focus and also have a say in the design. That’s why the company had the first worldwide Crowdsourcing Design Contest for headphones, whereby 4,902 headphone designs were up for vote. More than 355,000 people voted, and we have a winner.

Whether boldly colourful or in noble design – flashy DJ Headphones can be seen everywhere on the German streets, even long after they had to make room for their smaller in ear counterparts, the headbuds , in the early 90’s.Since their revival, the DJ Headphones are no longer just a technical device, but have become much more of a fashion statement. Therefore it is only logical that a representative from this category is one of the winners of this year’s international design competition.
