It’s not just 3D displays that have been pushing into the mainstream over the last few years – three-dimensional sound is one of the hottest audio trends. Way back at Prolight + Sound 2012, Fraunhofer IDMT introduced its ATMOSPHEA sound system for creating custom room acoustics. A couple of years ago, this ground-breaking new technology was installed for the first time anywhere in the world, in Hamburg Planetarium, to give visitors an unforgettable audio experience. Now there’s going to be another world premiere: Germany’s most successful series of audio dramas, Die drei ??? (The Three Investigators), is about to begin a unique 3D sound adventure there.
Whether in the studio or on stage: The Rolling Stones are one of the biggest rock bands of all time. Songs like “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction“, “Angie“, “Gimme Shelter“, and “Paint It Black“ elevated them to music Olympus. But they couldn’t have done it without the right equipment. So it’s no surprise that The Rolling Stones have brought out their own line of cables for microphone and guitar in cooperation with Bravado and audio manufacturer Adam Hall (based in the town of Neu-Anspach close to Frankfurt).
Adam Hall is a frontrunner in the audio and events industries. Prolight + Sound 2014 was another opportunity for them to present their latest products, including customised flight cases, the DAVE 18 G3 compact speaker system from LD Systems, and two new Audac power amplifier ranges.
The Musiktheater Linz caused a real buzz at Prolight + Sound 2014 Theatre and Film Colloquium. Why? Its revolving stage, operational for a year now, makes it one of the most modern and technologically best-equipped theatres in the world. For everyone who wasn’t able to make the presentation at Messe Frankfurt, here’s another chance to find out about this technological masterpiece.
The project was carried out by Austrian steel engineering specialists Waagner-Biro. “Our stage technology department has proved beyond doubt that it can deliver the biggest technical challenges to plan,” said Rudolf Estermann.
Bobby McFerrin’s number one hit song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” brought the American singer, musician, and conductor to the world’s attention. A ten-time Grammy winner, he can even imitate instruments with his unmistakeable voice. And he was also a guest at the recent 15th Leipzig International Festival of Vocal Music, appearing with his seven-man a cappella group in the Gewandhaus concert hall. The critically-acclaimed artist received technical backup from Fohhn Focus Modular systems.
SHOWTECH is going to be represented for the first time at next year’s Prolight + Sound 2015. The PLS team has asked Regine Hergersberg, managing director of Germany’s ‘The Filmmakers’ Federal Society of Film Industry Associations (Die Filmschaffenden – Bundesvereinigung der Filmschaffenden-Verbände e.V.) what we can expect at Messe Frankfurt between April 15th and 18th 2015.
Why should the film industry be represented at the Frankfurt Trade Fair?
Regine Hergersberg: Film is a multidisciplinary affair, one not quite like any other form of creative expression. All the areas of expertise that are combined in the production of a film are intertwined and dependent on each other. This is what ‘The Filmmakers’, as the umbrella organisation for the film and TV industry, is presenting at PLS, this connection between technology, creativity, and organisation.
When Udo Künzer founded German Light Products (GLP) in 1994, he couldn’t have guessed that 20 years later, the company would be at the forefront of LED technology, and that devices from his ‘impression’ line would be at home on the world’s biggest stages – from London’s West End to New York’s Broadway. The development of one of the very first products, the Patend Light, lead directly to the breakthrough. The hybrid spotlight stood out due to its fast mirror movement and a large field of pan/tilt movement, fulfilling all market demands in one product.
The introduction of the Patend Light was met with a massive response, and further products soon followed, including MAX, Mighty Scan, Pocket Scan, and from 2007 the development of the successful ‘impression’ series. The spotlights were already being used in some notable productions including top-rated German light-entertainment show “Wetten, Dass..?”, filmed on Mallorca.
In order to develop innovative new products, Sennheiser has been conducting audiological research for more than 40 years. The audio specialists, based in Wedemark, Germany, introduce their latest products every year at Prolight + Sound. One product that is guaranteed to be making an appearance in Messe Frankfurt in 2015 is Sennheiser’s very latest piece of cutting-edge technology: CinemaConnect. Audio experts Sennheiser see this novel live-streaming system as an opportunity to make culture accessible to everyone. Exactly how it will work was demonstrated just recently in Hamburg’s Abaton cinema.
The way CinemaConnect works is simplicity itself: cinemagoers connect to a specially set up WiFi network via a free smartphone app. Live-streaming gives them real-time access to additional soundtracks for visual descriptions or assistive listening, making it possible to experience the film via headphones.
The FIFA World Cup in Brazil is just around the corner to begin. In the past weeks and months, the German national team and its staff have been giving 110% in preparation for the big event. And they weren’t the only ones. At the LMP and V:LED ‘training camp’, research was conducted at high pace. Their mission: making the World Cup into unique ‘Public Viewing’ events throughout Germany and neighbouring countries, using newly-developed LED screens from V:LED.
Along with renowned German event organisers, V:LED has developed the new VSF6 LED-video system, presenting it at trade fairs including Prolight + Sound 2014. Trade visitors were highly impressed. It was soon clear that with the VSF6, V:LED was going to the be the first choice for many events organisers planning Public Viewing Events for the FIFA World Cup 2014.

MAYDAY has been a genuine electronic music institution since 1991, attracting tens of thousands of music fans who make it Germany’s biggest indoor rave. On the last weekend in April this year, it was that time again: more than 21,000 partygoers packed into Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle 1. The motto of MAYDAY 2014: Full Senses. Visitors were able to enjoy star DJs like Fedde le Grand, Paul van Dyk, Maguai, Sven Väth and Sander van Doorn with all their senses – not least thanks to a perfect technical set-up by Meyer Sound. Meyer Sound had already received an enthusiastic response to its brand new LYON loudspeaker system from visitors to Prolight + Sound 2014 at Messe Frankfurt - and they were able to show just how much their latest product has in its locker under live conditions just a few weeks later at MAYDAY Full Senses. “The sound was clean, clear, crisp, and had acres of headroom,” said Bernd Görgen, co-manager of Wiesbaden’s schokopro, the full-service-provider for sound, light, video and SFX which also made a noteworthy contribution to the event.
After Prolight is before Prolight – this is the spirit in which the Trade Fair Frankfurt team is already busily tackling the preparations for Prolight + Sound 2015. New ideas are being discussed, planned and refined. From April 15th to 18th 2015, the world’s biggest trade fair for light, sound and event technology will once again be attracting an international audience to Frankfurt’s exhibition grounds.
He has worked for the Rolling Stones and The Toten Hosen. Falco Zanini has been in the event industry for more than 33 years. At the Prolight + Sound Forum on March 14, he will shed light on the increasingly popular topic of sustainability.
Several months in advance, the trade fair Frankfurt team planned, prepared and got ready for Prolight + Sound and finally from 12-15 of March it was time. Almost 900 exhibitors from 42 countries presented their products from the lighting, sound and event technology industry, welcomed more than 42,000 guests from all over the world and presented a firework of technical highlights. Prolight + Sound once again proved it is the leading international trade fair. Prolight + Sound team gathered people's opinions about the trade fair.
Prolight + Sound was once again a first class trade fair. At every stand there was another technological development to discover. In Hall 8.0 Salzbrenner Stagetec Mediagroup made sure that many eyes lit up at the premiere presentation of their new POLARIS evolution mixing console. The special thing about it; it is the first network mixing console which you can fully personalize. A good reason to take a closer look at this pint sized technological wonder.
If the topic is laser shows with that special something, then KVANT is the one to go to. At the PLS 2013 the lighting experts from Slovakia put on a fascinating laser show. Naturally, they did things in style again for the Prolight 2014 where they presented their newest products in a first class show, including pretty women and background music. Those of you who were not able to see the show at Prolight + Sound 2014, can get a glimpse of the laser show here. Everyone else is invited to look back at the exciting days at the trade fair in Frankfurt. Enjoy!

Once again this year LMP will be one of the big draws at Prolight + Sound. Especially interesting will be the two new and exclusive products from ENTTEC and LaseArray. Both innovations will be presented at the over 700 square meter LMP City. LMP has even planned a few surprises for the presentations.
The LaseArray is an entirely new DMX controlled Laser bar. The light show with its individually controlled lasers will certainly be one of the lighting highlights of the trade fair.
