The Astro Spatial Audio system uses a unique object based audio technology for the generation of spatial audio experiences. Bjorn Van Münster, the audio director, talks in an interview about the highlights of this year's Prolight + Sound.
1. As one of the exhibitors of the Prolight + Sound 2018 you offer "immersive technologies"? What are the characteristics of these products?
Astro Spatial Audio is the world’s leading independent provider of scalable and easy-to-operate fully object-based immersive audio solutions. Delivering new creative options on tour with major artists and in theatres worldwide, ASA technologies can also be found in venues as varied as houses of worship, planetariums, theme parks, museums, nightclubs, cruise ships and more. At the heart of the ASA solution is the SARA II Premium Rendering Engine, a 3U road and rack ready processor offering up to 128 MADI or 128 Dante configurable network pathways at 48kHz/24-bit resolution, utilising extensive metadata attached to each audio object. SARA II produces a precise calculation of that object’s position within virtual 3D space, processed in real-time up to 40 times per second for each individual object, as well as that object’s acoustic effect on the virtual space around it. The result for the engineer is a truly three-dimensional audio canvas on which to play.
2. What products of that field do you distribute?
We manufacture the SARA II Premium Rendering Engine, as described above, giving our users a fully scalable and entirely brand agnostic object-based 3D audio platform as well as the ability to tailor the acoustics of a room towards your production. In addition, we offer full integration with Stagetracker II by TTA, the world’s most accurate performer localisation system.
3. As one of the leading company in immersive audio technologies people benefit from your experience. What do your customers cherish most?
Because Astro Spatial Audio solutions are object-based, they can be quickly and easily scaled from one venue to the next, regardless of the size of the venue or the loudspeaker set-up. Additionally, Astro Spatial Audio is entirely brand agnostic, so users benefit from all of the features of object-based audio without having to limit their choice of loudspeaker brand. We work with everything.
4. When you think about the Prolight + Sound - what strikes you the most about the exhibition?
The potential of attracting visitors to the regular demonstrations that we will be holding on our booth, showing the potential of object-based immersive audio and our full integration with Stagetracker II.
