Fold, connect and hook it up- the sound system for a casual stroll through the city or a picnic in the park is ready. A smart minded Berliner proved that the right sound doesn’t always have to come from award winning high-end technology. Designer Alex Pfaender created the Boombox, a speaker station for MP3 players and mobile phones. The unusual thing about it, the casing is made completely out of cardboard. Naturally it would not work without the right technology on the inside. The exceptional piece runs on batteries or rechargeable batteries. The sound is created by two integrated speakers. Built on the do-it-yourself principle, the hydrophobic product out of cardboard has to be pieced together by hand.
While thousands of fans cheer in front of their favourite band’s stage, jump up and down or follow the hundreds of scenes in a musical, and entire hoard of event managers and event engineers have been working in the background. They not only think about the lighting, sound and autograph hour, the question of the safety at the events plays a crucial role in the planning. At the “1st International Event Safety Conference” experts will lecture and discuss these exact topics. The conference takes place parallel to Prolight + Sound. We spoke with the consultant, Hubert Klüpfel, Executive Director of TraffGo HT, in greater detail about his lecture topic: “Evacuation Simulations”.
Who doesn’t like to use the comfortable advantages of online banking? The click “in my basket” is quick, the journey to the city center avoided and books, all kinds of electronic “toys”, shoes and much more are delivered right to your front door. While E-commerce continues to grow; the traditional commercial venues need ideas to make sure their customers keep coming back. An approach at solving the problem is called “Experience Marketing”.
“Experience Shopping” will soon play a central role in traditional commercial venues. Through events and interaction at the point of sale the consumer’s interest is awoken and his curiosity induced. This can be achieved through creative shop concepts, unique product lines, shopping events and exceptional customer service,” according to Sven Classen, chief executive of “Erlebnisbüro- die Markererlebnis GmbH”.
This week hundreds of thousands of spectators are champing at the bit in front of their TVs and on site, as professional winter sport athletes from all over the world swoosh down the snow covered slopes at the alpine skiing world championships. While some ski fans in the Austrian city of Schladming get to see the slope aces live, most of the rest of the winter sports fans can only watch the moving image on the TV. These images just might surprise you this year. For the first time, live camera feeds are being shown from the skier’s perspective.
In the development of a camera which can withstand the ski slopes, the video, audio and communications experts at Riedel Communications had their fingers in the pie. The camera which just came on the market this month, the RiCam, is put onto the ski goggles and sends extraordinary pictures from the athlete’s perspective. The broadcaster ORF is giving you the chance to marvel at these amazing scenes.
Since cloud covered mountains, iced landscapes or overgrown sheer rock walls, needed for film, TV and stage productions, are not always readily available outside your front door, nor do they grow on stage, you need alternatives. Professionals can create deceivingly real scenery- detailed all the way to the tip of the conifer. Therefore, the company Gerriets chose to specialize in the production of foils, textiles and scenery for theatre, film, TV, exhibition stands and open air venues.

Let’s take a little journey back in time. Back to the 60’s, as The Beatle’s made a crosswalk world famous, and songs such as “Help”, “Yellow Submarine” and “Yesterday” made our hearts melt. Let’s dare to look back to the 70’s, to four Swedish pop singers in flashy bell bottoms, whose songs “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen” were known far beyond their country’s borders. Why should we take a look at the past just now?
Why do you as an exhibitor use Prolight + Sound 2013?
Ingo Kaiser, Late Night Concepts: At Prolight + Sound we will introduce our brand new product the Cargo Cart. The product is the first of its kind to hit the markets worldwide. The Frankfurt Exhibition Fair even created its own product category for it. We think Prolight + Sound is the perfect platform to present the Cargo Cart to an international audience. Whether boldly colourful or in noble design – flashy DJ Headphones can be seen everywhere on the German streets, even long after they had to make room for their smaller in ear counterparts, the headbuds , in the early 90’s.Since their revival, the DJ Headphones are no longer just a technical device, but have become much more of a fashion statement. Therefore it is only logical that a representative from this category is one of the winners of this year’s international design competition.
With their impressive show laser system, they ensure the “aha effect” at mega events as well as at smaller free time and cultural events. Within the industry HB Laser has made a name for itself with its elaborate projections and new laser technology. Last year the professionals also presented themselves in their best light at Prolight + Sound. During the four days at the trade fair, as well as in the online world of the Frankfurt trade show, they presented, among other things, some of their video projections and laser as well as light installations . They are not the only ones who have used the digital services of the trade fair.
Who doesn't want to stand on a stage in front of an international audience? Many small businesses have enough creative ideas, but they often lack the financial means, to present their ideas at an international lighting fair such as Prolight + Sound. Whether it is the stand rental, stand construction or promotional materials- the costs of participating in a trade fair simply bust many start-ups budget.
To once again experience John Lennon together with the Beatles or Elvis’ legendary dance live and in color on the stage, most of us will never be able to experience those things. However, if we take into account the newest developments in projection engineering, many long gone legends could seem very alive and in turn breathe new life into the entire music industry.
Today we are going to leave the topics of elaborate sound and light installations used in stage productions and festivals, and instead concentrate on our own home. Nowadays, thanks to the extraordinary ideas of manufacturers throughout the world, we do not have to go without the sensational use of lighting and sound at home.
Bigger, more spectacular, flashier, the Americans are known for going over the top. That holds true for cars, shopping centers and the yearly Christmas decorations. Entire neighborhoods shine as bright as day long after the sun has set and are lit up with the craziest lighting installations. And because that is not enough, more and more houses are…. Well just see for yourself!
"... Joy spreads in every room, sparkle light with a bright glow, everywhere joy should be found."- so it stands in the popular German Christmas song. Whether the verses are sung in churches on Christmas Eve or in your own four walls, they take on a special interpretation in the small village of Calle. Here "sparkle light with bright glow" is taken quite literally. To be exact, 400,000 lights glow on just one house in Lower Saxony.
The combination of dance and music was compelling, the entire show fascinating and one of the biggest events in a long time. Those were just some of the comments about the current Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour.
Besides the acrobats, singers and dancers, it is the also artfulness of the audio and lighting, as well as the acoustic irradiation that makes this show an absolute must see event. Such renowned businesses as Meyer Sound, Martin Professional, DiGiCo and Optocore are the secret stars of the stage. These companies continually impress the visitors at Prolight + Sound with their high end products and their newly introduced developments.
The stage is perfectly lit, the PA system doesn’t have any back coupling and the set decorations keep the audience spellbound. What would a show be without first rate event technicians, scene painters or make-up artists? Probably very quiet and colorless.
