November 23rd 2014 saw the international premiere of the musical Das Wunder von Bern (‘The Miracle of Bern’) at the newly built Stage Theater an der Elbe - making it a fitting companion for the Theater im Hafen Hamburg, where the German version of The Lion King the musical has been playing since 2001. Audiences and critics have both given the new football-themed musical a warm welcome. Yet it isn’t just the plot, performers and musicians that have won them over - groundbreaking lighting technology developed by Philips has also played its part.
‘Michel’ is the nickname of one of Hamburg’s most treasured symbols, and it’s not just the residents of the port city who know and love St Michael’s Church. So it was that in September, the church was chosen as the backdrop for a very special musical experience. Lyricist Michael Kunze and composer Dieter Falk presented the biblical musical “Die 10 Gebote” (The Ten Commandments) to an audience of 2,000. To make sure the music struck the right tone, audio specialists Fohhn installed its world-famous Beam Steering Technologie.
It’s not just 3D displays that have been pushing into the mainstream over the last few years – three-dimensional sound is one of the hottest audio trends. Way back at Prolight + Sound 2012, Fraunhofer IDMT introduced its ATMOSPHEA sound system for creating custom room acoustics. A couple of years ago, this ground-breaking new technology was installed for the first time anywhere in the world, in Hamburg Planetarium, to give visitors an unforgettable audio experience. Now there’s going to be another world premiere: Germany’s most successful series of audio dramas, Die drei ??? (The Three Investigators), is about to begin a unique 3D sound adventure there.
Sylvester Stallone celebrated his life’s successes with the “Rocky” film series. “Rocky - The Musical”, based upon the film, is now doing the same. The show has been playing in the Hamburger Operettenhaus for the past year. According to the New York Times, it is convincing because it combines the intimate and the epic. The acoustics play an important role, too. Meyer Sound knows what it takes.
