For decades, cruises have been one of the best-loved ways to take a well-earned break. The ships themselves are floating giants, standing comparison to any luxury hotel on land. And the lighting on the newest addition to TUI’s fleet of cruise ships, Mein Schiff 3 (‘My Ship 3’) is a real feast for the eyes, consisting as it does of top-quality spots and beams from ROBE.
The dynamic lighting system sets the scene for the ship’s theatre and nightclub. Chris Moylan of Optikalusion, who had previously worked on the cruise ship’s predecessor, developed the concept in collaboration with TUI Cruises head of technology Torsten Hirche. Their design included numerous Robin 100 LEDBeams providing visual effects for the dance floor at Abtanzbar, the ship’s nightclub. Arranged in a matrix, the lighting rigs are the ideal solution here since they take up so little space. A real bonus is their zooming capability: with a range reaching between 5.5 and 60 degrees, illuminating surfaces of varying sizes is made simple. In addition to the full range of effects possible, the rig is energy efficient and easily transportable.
Light and shadow play a role in the ship’s theatre too. The front and backlighting over the stage is the heart of Moylan and Hirche’s concept. Additional overall lighting is provided by several 800 LEDWash lights. This side lighting ensures optimal viewing conditions.
